The Equation of the Day
Jun. 22nd, 2003 11:31 pmHamilton's Theme – Brian Keane
Sunday
I do not believe in ghosts, spirits, or gods. However I do believe in fate, wyrd, or something of that nature. Not that my life is guided somehow, but something more akin to the way certain number tricks work. Lives have a certain calculus to them, and so I get the mind boggling coincidences like where I turn back to retrieve a mobile phone and run into Elise Mattheson.[1]
The same sort of thing happened to me again today and that's why I didn't get in here to write an entry until now. But now I have a really fun story about my day.
As per usual on Sunday I went to brunch at Goodfriends restaurant. I told Maya the story of the "Princess on Glass Hill" and then "Briar Rose". That was fun and I had a really excellent breakfast. Now Sunday the 22nd was Pridefest in Denver, the gay, lesbian, and everything else parade and county fair of the strange. I'm not too thrilled by them usually, it is too hot, there are too many people (still shy), and I express my resolution to not hide this aspect of myself in other ways. But a friend of mine from out of town, Joe Agee[2], was in town and was there to see the parade and so on.
There was virtually no hope that I would actually see him in the huge crowd, but I thought I might go down there after brunch anyway on the off chance I might. I was distracted from this by the suggestion that I come down with Rose, Richard, Carol, and Maya[3] to the art festival happening at 2nd Avenue and Grant Street. I did that and I enjoyed walking around to see the paintings for sale by artists. I was also pleasantly surprised to see one sci-fi themed painting amid all the pretty landscapes and non-representational art. Boba Fet done in oils, not badly either. Not my something I would hang on my wall, but it was cool to see it there with all the more ordinary art.
Then it was off to get sunblock (very important when going to Pridefest in Denver... or just being outdoors in Colorado in general) and then to the gay exhibition. I found a nice place to park next to some trees; I was very pleased by this. In a good mood my first encounter was with a Robbin, a very nice guy who I dated for a while. I hung out with him until I was greeted by Jim, part of the goth contingent and also a member of Outer Fandom (Denver's social group for gay fans of science fiction). I wandered with him, told him about the plan to see League of Extraordinary Gentlemen after Outer Fandom next month, and eventually wandered off to hit my favorite clothing stores on 13th Avenue.
After clothing and deciding not to buy some very cool boots at The Buffalo Exchange (a bit small in bottom and too big around my leg) I decided to see my friend Joey Marchione, a fellow book collector. Very nice guy, we talked and I got a much needed drink of water.
Now here is where fate hit me hard. I was walking up Pennsylvania Avenue and a car horn honked at me. The driver of the car waiting at the light was none other than Joe Agee, I went over and jumped in his passenger seat. He had just finished seeing pride and was now going to go to Relatively Wilde (formerly Category Six Books) over on Broadway. I'm always up for book shopping so I tagged along with him. It was a pretty good coincidence that I would leave my friend Joey's apartment at just the right time to meet Joe just leaving Pridefest, but such is life and I’m used to it now.
Relatively Wilde was closed so instead I dragged him a block up Broadway to the Book Mall and my very favorite of all used bookstores, Fahrenheit's. I couldn't help myself, I ended up buying two more Walter Jon Williams books and was nearly temped into buying a first edition of The Vampire Tapestry by Suzy McKee Charnas. But since it had a signed letter with it it was $125, so being broke I skipped on this one. The rest I'll pay for by eating more ramen than real food this month.
We were going to go for Ice Cream at Bonnie Brae, but instead went out for a quick bite of food near Joe's hotel with his workmates. Matt had an interesting story, he had been golfing and a small beetle flew into his ear. Very Mountains of the Moon, though he apparently suffered no ill effects after they got it out at the emergency room. That's why we ended up eating, because their gold game ended early and this in turn is why we ended up going to The Matrix Reloaded on the IMAX screen at the Colorado Center.[4]
This was another interesting coincidence, given what one of the major themes of that movie is. Decision making and fate. So that was my fun and strange day.
Now I have to just decide if my joking about "Maybe I should move to Minneapolis" is just that or something I should think about. My equation is still running.

[2] This is in fact the same Joe Agee who picked me up at the beginning of my adventures in Minneapolis.
[3] For those who might be curious this is referring to Rose Beetem and our friends Richard Morrman, Carol Angel, and their daughter Maya. We go to brunch nearly every Sunday along with a number of other people. I'll relate more on that some other time.
[4] Note, for anyone still wishing to see Ghosts of the Abyss, the 3-D movie about exploring the wreak of the Titanic, it's still playing there for a short time. I just happened to notice this as I was going by.
(BTW, does anyone know what the rule is on using either unlining vs. italics when listing movie titles, books titles, and so on?)

Moving to Minneapolis

Date: 2003-06-23 09:57 am (UTC)The last I checked, titles of "large" works were supposed to be italicized. I learned to underline them in school because the typewriters didn't have italics available. Titles of short works are quoted ("). Don't ask me where the dividing line is between a short work of written fiction and a large one - one usable rule of thumb could be 'has it been published in a stand-alone volume?'
Part of this goes back to an old text-setting rule I learned - when it goes to the printer, underline gets turned into italics.
