I have a wonderful new fwend! Amanda, known around these parts as [livejournal.com profile] eibii, got a ride from me to the DASFA Alternate party on Saturday. She seems to like us and she agreed to join the Crew of Grenadine. Random tangent, there needs to be a word for when I like a person but don't know yet if he or she is a friend yet. But whatever stage that is Amanda is past it because we sat around talking for hours after the party about everything from yaoi fiction to fannish experiences. So very cool!

I also misremembered the party location as Huron instead of Grant Street so we were late. But it was all good. The subject of Charles Hansen, a late member of the Colorado Fantasy Society, came up. It seems he had a film of the masquerade at the 3rd Worldcon, Denvention in 1941. No one at the party had any idea of what might have happened to it. That's frustrating. It would be so cool to have something like that and get it transferred to disc so that it could be shown at cons and at fan parties. I mean, what a piece of history!

Speaking of which I'm thinking I'm going to renew my efforts to document DASFA history. Both as it happens and to get down memories of our past. I'll have to get some sort of portable digital recorder for those times at parties when DASFAns start reminiscing. Then I could transcribe what was said later. Must ponder this for a while.

Rhonda and Tay were there, of course, since it is their house. I saw Patrick and Sue Ann. I'm told that John and Bonnie stopped by before heading up to the Mad Scientist's party. Gail and Sourdough completed the circle of Dasfans.

I'm glad you and DASFA are getting along, and that you made a New Friend.

If you get a recorder, can I borrow it? I promise not to ever give it back.

I'm not sure, but it is *possible* that I might have footage of Denvention I that I inherited from Don Thompson after he died and no one else particularly wanted such stuff. Of course, as I recall part of it is on old Super 8 film reels as opposed to VHS tapes, so we'll have to figure out how to look at it. Remind me next time you visit and we'll snouse around in my room o' media. --Rose

I'm actually surprised that you hadn't met Amanda before. She's been around fandom for a bit now and she's amazingly exuberant while still being quiet at times. Sorry, I don't know her terribly well, but I do like her quite alot. She & Robert keep exchanging numbers and meaning to hang out, but it never seems to quite work out. I'm just glad that she's been able to grow into her own and really isn't seen (from what I can tell, anyway) much as a child of fandom so much as a fan herself.

Glad you made this cool connection, though.

Annabel (whose goal it is to make it to a DASFA meeting sometime in December or January)

Oh I have run into her before at MileHiCon. I've just not had the chance to hang out with her for any length of time. That's why the stuff about her being cool, but I wasn't sure if she was a friend or not. And there really needs to be a word for that. To express that you've met a person and think well of 'em, but don't know 'em well enough to be throwing the word friend around. Maybe we could use frood.

That would be way cool! And I think my dad has a projector if it is on super 8. And if it is then we should make some copies, pronto! At least I think so.

Well, if nothing else, using the word frood would get tons of giggles and giggles usually leads to friendship.

{grin}

But, seriously, I think you're right. There needs to be a word to describe that relationship that isn't quite as cold as acquantaince.

Well if so, all the better! Frood it is. Amanda was totally a hoopy frood, but now she's a friend. I shall have to issue a proclamation with the new definition of frood.

Ken Burns (http://www.pbs.org/kenburns/) is a American film maker who produces really long documentaries about American history. Like his epic 9 part, 11 & ½ hour film The Civil War (http://www.pbs.org/civilwar/) on that American war. If you fear documentaries, especially ones with lots of dramatic pictures and voice-overs, he's the thing hiding in your anxiety closet.

Yeah but that's essentially a really long war movie right? I LIKE WAR MOVIES!

There aren't any war scenes in it. Just photographs from the era and lots and lots of letter being read. With some historians giving their thoughts about thus and such battle. And maps. If that's too much to your liking we could play his history of Baseball. 18 pointless hour long episodes. Bwahahahaha!
