Closing Time - Semisonic
Sunday
For my last day at the convention I started out wearing levi's and my LotR style DASFA tee shirt. I got some complements on both and so my ego was quite gratified. The selection of cereals in the consuite was suitably horrifying. Lots and lots of very sugary breakfast concoctions including a box of "green slime" cereal. I could have easily gone into insulin shock eating almost anything there, but I found a box of grape-nuts hiding in the corner. There were many discussions of the relative merits of different items for the first meal of the day.
I felt slightly at loose ends, usually at conventions when I am not interested in any of the panels going on I'll go help out somewhere. But it felt like there wasn't much of a need for aid anywhere I went. Mostly I just got people to sign up for my email 'zine, Maybe next year I'll have to go sit down in the panel or a reading even the description does not sound totally enthralling, after all I might be surprised. However what I like to do best with fen is to talk, get into one of those great back and forth discussions of some topic. That's probably why I like being online so much. It is even easier to have such 'conversations' because everyone can do research and has time to contribute something.
Rose went off to try seeing her sister Bonnie and I divided my time between hanging out in the consuite and wandering about until 1pm when the auction started. I think they didn't get as great of a sellection of things to auction off this year. Or at least it seemed that way, maybe they just were not to my taste. I did bid occasionally, but I didn't have much money left and so I wasn't going to drive things up like I might have in past years.
Rose was back in time for the Roy Tackett memorial. I had not known previous to this year that the reason for them being the Green Slime awards was because that was Roy's favorite color. They even found a little oil lamp that burned with a green flame. The whole people talking about their memories was fairly moving, even to me someone who only met Roy twice in his later years. There were a lot of Green Slime Awards, including one that I was put off by at the time. I think it was a movie that I think the nominator just didn't get rather than it being actually bad. I'll have to write Kathy for a list of the Green Slimes, I didn't think to write them down at the time.
Closing ceremonies were short and sweet. Everyone scattered after taking down the posters in the main events room and Rose and I ran off to buy goodies for the Dead Dog. We way overestimated the appetite of the fans, we were left with a whole bag of those little carrots and pounds of candy. Next year half as many drinks if we buy any. We got several cases from the consuite and we didn't manage to use them up. I think we had a total of 11 people come through the dead dog.
Charles Vess and Charles DeLint showed up for a while at the party. And it is my fault that Wendy has a note from DeLint in her signed book saying, "Have a neat summer." We were talking about why people want their books signed and I had been going on about how for me getting things signed by authors or BNFs at the convention is like getting a yearbook signed. It's a memento of an occasion, a fun time I had one year. So of course he decided to have a little fun with his personalization of the book.
I was fading fast around 1am. I had sprawled out on some chairs and fallen partially asleep, apparently people though I was faking it since Kathy tickled by stomach to test me or something. That brought me around with a start and a batted away her hand. Soon thereafter I decided that I would go up to the room and sleep because otherwise I would end up sleeping on the floor. Fin Bubonicon.
I'll have to let everyone from the convention know that I have this up now so they can come correct my mistakes now.
