Retailer Review: Capitol Hill Books

mishalakAn excellent bookstore occupies the corner of Grant Street and Colfax Avenue in Denver. Capitol Hill Books has been in business for over two decades and is now under the management of its third proprietor, Holly Brooks. Being located just one block from the state capitol building it is an easy detour for any out of town book lover seeing the sights and not afraid of coming back with an extra box or two.
New, used, and rare books are for sale, but the emphasis is clearly on used books in all categories. For the science fiction or fantasy reader there are two full bookcases of hardbacks and slightly more than that in paperback. Good prices on all the volumes that I've looked at, but they don't make vast under pricing mistakes that make a collector's heart go all a flutter. A clear buying policy makes this a good place to sell books as well as buy them, but it can also make it difficult because of all the other people trying to sell books at the appointed times.
A few negatives about them are that their website requires flash (ick) and it is a small bookstore and thus is frequently a place to hunt and not find rather than to get the one thing your heart most wants. Though more than a few times I've found things I didn't remember that I needed until I saw them sitting there upon the shelf. Balancing that out, in my opinion, is the ability to search their catalogue for at least the more collectable items online. Plus the place is just darn cool.
Three rooms of books plus some excellent tee shirts, nice staff, good atmosphere, it is a good place to shop and a must if you are looking for Ed Bryant books.

Who's if for: People who like hunting for books or in search of a bargain without being totally set upon any one book in particular. Also book people who like to stop and chat about books with the dealers.
Who won't like it: Anyone who wants a particular book and/or wants it brand new.
