Entertaining
Oct. 21st, 2012 11:45 pmSuccess at the convention! I repeated the little show of dressing up as Dr Sheldon Cooper for the costume contest. And it succeeded again and a lot of people were amused. I like to think of everything I do a conventions as being a sort of performance artist. Putting on a show, usually without a stage. Alas I cannot show how I dressed due to failure of camera documenting skills on my part. Though I can say that I wore leather pants with my doublet on Saturday Morning, then I was Dr. Cooper for the costume contest, and then the jeans with the leather flames on them with a velvet shirt and far too much hematite jewelry.
I took second place in the costume contest this time around, but I still do not know what I might do if I were going to do another costume event like this. I have had ideas, but none of them are as obviously a good fit for me.
Doctor Who, David Tennant version.
I do not look enormously like the 10th Doctor, but I look more like him than Matt Smith. Alas I cannot grow sideburns and he has them. Would I be able to do something entertaining as the Doctor? On the positive side if I get a nice suit I could wear it for things other than playing the Doctor. So that, in a way, reduces the cost.
Spike of Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Angel
I do look A bit like Mr Masters, but not quite as well built. Getting just the right leather trench coat would also be problematic and then there is the issue of being entertaining while walking around. Last, but not least, the show has been off the air for almost a decade now. How many people will still recognize Spike?
Jareth the Goblin King
I do have skinny and the hair is not a problem since it is a wig. But I would need to learn actual skills to pull it off and it is even older than Buffy.
Baron Munchausen
I would need a prosthetic nose and to learn makeup. On the positive side he is the sort of character that does not actually need to be recognized for the jokes to work since, at least in the movie, he is often introducing himself and explaining. Another big expensive costume though.
Raoul Duke
Downside, potential arrest if I act too much like a drugged lunatic. Up side, very inexpensive costume though I would have to (probably) shave my head unless I keep the ridiculous hat on the whole time. Also, will people get the joke? Is Hunter S. Thompson too obscure for today's fan? And is he really a SF sort of costume?
