I come to bury Avatar, not to praise it; The evil that movies do lives after them, The good is oft interred with their box office, So let it be with Avatar...
Seriously, did everyone I have a passing familiarity just now become a crotchety old adult? Yeah, the plot of Avatar was as predictable as anything, but so was Star Wars. Seriously. Go back and watch it now with the same critical eye that makes you say that Avatar is nothing more than a CGIed-up Dances With Wolves. When it comes right down to it entertainment is pretty damn thin stuff. If you're looking for where the gilded wood does not look like something made out of solid gold you'll always find it.
Yes, this movie like pretty much every big box office movie ever produced by Hollywood is aimed almost square center of the White English Speaking World of the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom. It is not going to seriously challenge the opinions or tastes of these countries, particularly not the USA. When you look at the amount of money have to spend in these countries the budgets of movies make a damn lot of sense. Movie about magic blue skinnedAmerican-Indians aliens aimed at teenage boys? $310 million budget. Biopic about gay politician that mostly gay people will go to see? $20 million budget.
The fact is that people like me are not as numerous and we don't go to the movies as often as suburban teenagers. I go to perhaps two movies a month (at the very most) in the the theater and check out a few from the library. Of course they're not going to create a nuanced fantasy film with a gay lead aimed at me. Even the other gays wouldn't go to see it, much less the bread and butter of a big budget film the middle class young dumbass.
And I say dumbass with all the affection in the world since I was that person when I was a teen. I thought The Lord of the Rings was the greatest novel ever and would probably have loved the movie for the badassery added to it. That's what teenagers are like. That's what most people are like. That's what people have been like since the beginning of time. And even this isn't a particularly original observation. I bet the first version of it was expressed soon after someone wrote a rant about the low quality of the theater and its entertainments for the masses while Nero fiddled and lions were eating christians.
