Connecticut has enacted a law to allow homosexual civil unions. It is, from all indications, equal except for what it is called. Though the law also makes it so marriage is only between a man and a woman this is a success. This is the first time when a state has enacted civil unions without being under the threat of a court order. I personally would prefer that it be equal all one way or all the other, with everyone having civil unions or everyone having marriage, but this will do for now until the people of Connecticut come around to that.

What I'd like is for the government to see is that all they should be able to grant is a civil union, and marriages should be left to the churches. In legalese, that is; colloquially, it would all marriage anyway. ("Did you have a civil union *and* a church wedding?" "No, just the civil union." "Congratulations on your marriage!")

I never thought I'd say it, but France does it right. You go and have the courthouse wedding. If you feel like it, you follow it up with the church wedding. They're distinct and separate, and if we'd had that all along, there'd be a lot less idiocy in this country right now.
