he illusion was completed by the fact that the light was spilling out over one of lower sections of the mountains, it looked very much like a churning river spilling a load of gold from the land beyond the Neversummer Range onto the city and plains.

The fog does that in San Francisco. Though of course, it isn't golden but silvery grey and white.
