Review: WALL•E
Sure, it was not realistic. But it was a movie and it stayed true to its own internal rules so I did not mind one bit after the first fifteen or so minutes. I was interested in the vision of robot minders gone amuck, but not so amuck that they start genocide against humanity.
I was also charmed by the use of "Hello Dolly" as the favorite entertainment of the little robot that had a nearly wordless way of conveying feeling. He (for he certainly seemed more of a he than an it) reminded me of ET in his groans and repetition of words.
Because I was lucky enough to learn very little about the movie before I went I found myself surprised by many things that happened. Would that I could go to more great movies this way. And ultimately I found the fate of humanity and its creations in this movie to be hopeful. That the mistakes we make may only be for now rather than forever. Even at our worst we can choose better than perhaps our ancestors did and even countermand their orders if we are willing to put an effort into it.
I think this movie is Hugo material. Sure the physics and math of this is not hard science fiction by any stretch of the imagination. But it is a good underlying SF story with nice big concepts and an interesting spin on many ideas that have been used before in other films and books. And I like how this movie ended up a lot better than I Am Legend or any fantasy movie I've seen so far. It has a message without being too overwhelming with it. And it is not necessarily the obvious message of "We're destroying the Earth". It takes that loud message as just a backdrop to say something good about people, "We can overcome our bad qualities."
